Serving Tallahassee, Valdosta, and Panama City, FL

The 2018 Subaru Outback is a crossover SUV that offers six models. The 2018 Toyota Highlander is a mid-size crossover SUV that comes in eight editions. Four trims are available for the 2018 Ford Escape, which is a compact crossover SUV. The BOXER engines, Lineartronic transmission and Symmetrical AWD make the Outback more versatile than these rivals. Additionally, this Subaru carries the EyeSight technology that includes class-leading safety features.

Powertrain

A horizontally opposed configuration is the signature mark of the BOXER powertrain in the 2018 Subaru Outback. The 2.5 L engine generates up to 175 horsepower, and the 3.6 L produces a maximum of 256 horsepower. Both of these naturally aspirated engines have DOHC components and the Active Valve Control System. By contrast, the four-cylinder engines in the 2018 Toyota Highlander and Ford Escape have a traditional inline configuration. Carrying the EcoBoost label, the Escape's 1.5 L and 2.0 L engines are turbocharged to deliver optimum performance. The BOXER engines don't need a turbo boost to provide reliable output.

Handling

Standard in the 2018 Subaru Outback, the Lineartronic CVT is more dynamic and responsive than the automatic transmission systems in the Highlander and Escape. The Hill Holder and Incline Start Assist are incorporated into the advanced CVT. If you're in the mood for a classic-style experience, take advantage of the six manual settings. Additionally, the Lineartronic transmission is managed by the Adaptive Control that makes real-time adjustments based on the surrounding conditions. An electronically controlled CVT is only available in the hybrid Highlander models. The gasoline-powered trims come with an eight-speed transmission with the Direct Shift technology.

In the Ford Escape, the SelectShift transmission only offers six gear speeds. On the auto market for numerous years, the Symmetrical AWD makes the Outback ready for any terrain. This sophisticated drivetrain is paired with the X-MODE to boost off-road performance. You'll also love the Hill Descent Control technology that's designed for handling steep gradients. Not all of the Ford Escape models are available with the Intelligent 4WD. Similarly, only select Highlander trims are compatible with an AWD system.

Safety

The Reverse Automatic Braking is an industry-leading technology that's available in the 2018 Subaru Outback. This feature applies the brakes if another vehicle is detected in your projected path in reverse. A high-resolution camera also captures a wide-angle rear view for real-time feedback. The 2018 Highlander and Escape don't have automatic braking features that prevent rear collisions. When a front crash is imminent, the Pre-Collision Braking takes over control of the Outback. The Pre-Collision System in the Highlander offers similar accident-avoidance capability. All three models have technology that monitors the driver's blind spot and issues alerts for lane drift. The High Beam Assist and LED daytime running lights make the Outback less prone to accidents on roads with poor visibility.
