Delivering up to 175 horsepower, the 2.5 L BOXER engine is standard in most of the 2018 Subaru Outback trims. The 3.6 L BOXER engine produces just more than 255 hp and under 250 lb-ft of torque. You won't get more than 172 hp from the 2018 Toyota RAV4's 2.5 L engine. Subaru's Lineartronic CVT offers more gear options and custom settings than the RAV4's six-speed automatic transmission. The Outback also boasts the Symmetrical AWD that maintains better traction than Toyota's On Demand AWD or Dynamic Torque Control AWD. Additionally, the X-MODE is a sophisticated system that optimizes the engine, brakes, gearbox and other mechanical components.

Subaru has updated its signature STARLINK infotainment system for the 2018 Outback. This advanced multimedia platform has an 8.0-inch touch screen, which has a better interface than the Toyota RAV4's 7.0-inch Entune platform. The navigation software in the STARLINK system is powered by TomTom, and you can also download the Magellan application for extra guidance. A dozen speakers by Harman Kardon play music on SiriusXM, Aha, iHeartRadio and Pandora in the Outback. You won't find as many music channels in the Toyota RAV4, which offers up to 11 speakers by JBL GreenEdge. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay also give this Subaru an upper hand in smartphone connectivity.
