Differences Between 2018 Subaru BRZ & 2018 Toyota 86

Serving Tallahassee, Valdosta, and Panama City, FL

The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 were introduced a few years ago, and many consumers thought that they were seeing double. The two models are built on the same platform and appear identical from a distance. The main difference between the two models centers around uplevel standard and optional features. The 2018 BRZ can be customized to a further degree than the 2018 Toyota 86, and there are several performance upgrades possible that result in a more satisfying driving experience.

Drive Dynamics

The 2018 Subaru BRZ is powered by a 2.0L, four-cylinder engine:

  • 205 horsepower
  • 156 lb-ft of torque
  • 6-speed manual or automatic transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive

The 2018 Toyota 86 is fitted with the same engine and transmission choices, and it is also rear-wheel drive only. The problem with the Toyota 86 is that there are no performance upgrades available. The BRZ Limited trim can be purchased with the automatic transmission, and it also comes with special Brembo high-performance brakes, Sachs performance dampers, and alloy wheels. Toyota offers an upgraded suspension system, but the result is only minor handling improvement.

2018 Subaru BRZ Interior

Interior

Standard exterior and interior features on the base trim Subaru BRZ include:

  • Summer performance tires
  • LED headlights
  • A leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel
  • A 6.2-inch screen display
  • Bluetooth, smartphone streaming audio apps, and a USB port
  • An eight-speaker sound system with satellite radio

The uplevel Toyota 86 GT doesn't add much in terms of high-tech features. The GT does come with a rear spoiler, but that's standard on the base trim BRZ. Dual-zone climate control is added when the GT 86 is chosen, but it's also standard on the BRZ Limited. The Limited also offers a newly designed 7-inch screen display, heated front seats, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2018 Toyota 86 can't be purchased with heated front seats, nor is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available.

2018 Subaru BRZ Exterior

User-Friendly Interior

The two models are essentially the same size, and the interiors have similar dimensions, but the 2018 Subaru BRZ offers:

  • A more comfortable rear seating area than does the Toyota 86
  • Well-placed forward controls
  • Soft-touch materials and very little hard plastic

The 2018 Toyota 86 is similarly appointed, but the front seats are positioned differently than on the BRZ, and it's more difficult to load anything into the back seating area. Neither model offers much in terms of rear seating area volume anyway, but it's easier to load kids or groceries into the back seating area on the BRZ. Also, the driving position is perfect on the BRZ, but taller drivers may have a hard time getting the adjustment correct on the Toyota 86.

These models aren't all that different from one another, but the uplevel BRZ offers much more than does the Toyota 86 GT. Test drive the 2018 Subaru BRZ today at Proctor Subaru, and call ahead to inquire about current inventory. Don't forget to ask about the limited edition BRZ tS, an exciting variant with an even longer list of convenience and performance features.
