Drivers looking for a reliable car or crossover with an outstanding safety record, great features, and expansive cargo space have two excellent options to consider from Subaru: the 2018 Forester, a compact SUV, and the 2018 Outback, a station wagon. The Outback has updated styling both inside and out for the new model year, as well as the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. The Forester has added automatic emergency braking to the EyeSight suite of active safety features. If you're considering a Subaru, here's what you need to know about these models.

The 2018 Subaru Outback comes with a choice of two engines: a 175-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder that gets an EPA-estimated 25 city and 32 highway miles per gallon, or a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder that gets 20 city/27 highway mpg. All-wheel-drive, hill descent control, and high ground clearance are all standard, making this a great car for the adventurous; it can also tow up to 2,700 pounds.

The 2018 Subaru Forester is also suitable for off-roading with standard all-wheel-drive and hill descent control. It comes standard with a 2.5-liter 170-horsepower four-cylinder, with available upgrade to a 250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The base engine gets 26 city/32 highway mpg, compared with 23/27 for the turbocharged version.

The 2018 Subaru Outback is distinguished by its comfortable, spacious interior, including supportive seats, high-quality materials, and best-in-class cargo space (35.5 cubic feet, or 73.3 with the seats folded down). All trim levels include generous tech features, starting in the base model with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system integrated with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, a rearview camera, satellite and HD radio, and a four-speaker audio system.

The 2018 Subaru Forester features a clean, no-frills interior that will appeal to drivers with a practical soul. Like the Outback, it boasts comfortable seats that are perfect for a long road trip as well as class-leading cargo space (34.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 74.7 cubic feet with them folded). Tech features are comparable to those in the Outback.

While crash tests are not yet complete for these 2018 Subarus, they are expected to meet or exceed the stellar performance of last year's models. Both the 2017 Forester and Outback received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration as well as Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute on Highway Safety, its highest honor.

High-tech driver assistance features are available in both the 2018 Forester and Outback. The Outback can be upgraded with blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic pre-collision braking, reverse automatic braking, and automatic high beams. The Forester adds lane departure warning to this expansive list.
