Guide to Off Roading near Tallahassee

With a few pointers and some common sense, off roading can be a lot of fun. A little housekeeping is necessary, it is important that your car is prepared and you are ready for the driving conditions. Check and make sure your oil and fluids are topped off, and that your car battery is in good shape to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Take a look at all four tires and double check they have the correct tire pressure. Once you get out on the road, make sure you look over the hood of your car so you can see both sides. Keep your thumbs on the outside of the steering wheel so any steering wheel jerks don’t hurt your hands. It is a good idea to avoid traveling alone, and make sure you watch for signs to only drive in permitted areas.

Off Roading in Tallahassee

2015 Subaru XV

Off roading can mean going over courses of sand, snow, mud, rock, and many other forms of natural terrain the average vehicle would be incapable of navigating. No matter what form of off roading you choose to do, you will need a vehicle that has been designed to handle the driving conditions you are likely to encounter.

Off-Road Trails near Tallahassee

The area around Tallahassee has several designated trail systems designed specifically for those who want to take their Subaru vehicle off-road. One of the most popular areas is the Ocala National Forest where you will find a wide range of trails that have been created for slow speeds. These trails wind through many miles of forests and wetlands where you can see dozens of different forms of wildlife.

For those who prefer to spend a little more time in the challenging sand, there is the Apalachicola National Forest. Here you will find over one hundred miles of trails and a number of off trail play areas that are sure to give you and your Subaru a good workout. The best place to access the trail system is at Silver Lake and some of the trails are open no matter what the weather happens to be.

Are you ready to take your Subaru to Hell, Tate's Hell that is? This 150 mile plus trail system offers trails for ATVs, motorcycles, and of course off-road vehicles. The trails wind through miles of cypress and titi swamps, pine flatwoods, and blackwater. Established in 2005, you can see dozens of different forms of wildlife including deer and birds. Please remember that all state parks require a permit in order to take your Subaru or any other vehicle on these trails.

Off-Road Wheels and Tires

If you are planning to take your vehicle off road, it needs to be ready to take on the challenge. While your new Subaru may come with a set of perfectly function wheels with "all-terrain" tires from the factory, these may not be the best choice for the type of off-roading or terrain you plan to encounter.

First let's look at the wheels, aluminum or alloy rims may look great going down the road, but steel wheels are far stronger. A good set of steel wheels can take the punishment and are relatively inexpensive. However, forged rims are even stronger and weigh significantly less, making them the best choice.

Tires come in many styles, but the most important thing to consider when buying off-road tires is that you need to choose tires with a tread pattern that will provide maximum traction in the conditions you plan to drive in. Blockier treads are best for mud and gravel, while specialty treads have been designed for use in sand. Bear in mind that when it comes to off-road tires, you get what you pay for so be sure to do your homework before spending your money.

Off Road Vehicles

Going off-road and out into the wild can be a lot of fun as long as the vehicle you choose is properly set up to do so. These vehicles typically sit higher to provide ground clearance to help you clear rocks and obstacles in your way. Most if not all are either four-wheel or all-wheel drive to ensure you gain maximum traction under most driving conditions. On AutoTrader “Top Least Expensive All-Wheel Drive Cars” four out of the ten are Subaru models.
