Recharging on the Road

Using a series-parallel hybrid system that combines a gas engine with electric motors and a battery, the 2025 Forester Hybrid conveniently recharges its battery on the road to give you better mileage and fewer emissions.

This is done by the hybrid vehicle's regerative brakes, capturing kinetic energy during deceleration and converting it into electrical energy, which is then stored in the battery.

As a result, this system does save fuel on the highway compared to ICE vehicles, but works best with stop-and-go traffic where you have lift the accelerator pedal more often.

Hybrid Vehicles FAQs

What is a hybrid vehicle?

The most common hybrid vehicle is a gas-electric hybrid, which has both an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor powered by batteries. These two power sources work together to enhance the vehicle's fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

How does a hybrid vehicle compare with ICE and electric vehicles?

ICE, Hybrid, and Electric vehicles all have key differences that may work for some and not for others depending on priorities and lifestyle. Electric vehicles have lower running costs and environmental benefits, while ICE vehicles have simpler maintenance and more power. Hybrid vehicles land somehwere in the middle offering good fuel economy with stop-start driving and minimal maintenance. All are worthy options to consider when choosing a vehicle with the features and specifications that will most suit you.

Why are electric and hybrid vehicles more expensive than ICE vehicles?

Generally, ICE vehicles are less expensive and electric vehicles are more expensive, hybrid versions falling somewhere in between. ICE vehicles may be a better choice for those looking for a cheaper purchase price, while others may prefer electric for cheaper fuel and maintenance down the road in exchange for a higher purchase price. In the same way, hybrid vehicles are slightly less expensive than electric ones, a win-win for those preferring a fuel engine while reducing emissions.

How do hybrid cars work?

Hybrid vehicles only need to be fueled with gas, no plug-in charge required. This is because the gas engine recharges the car’s battery. Hybrid vehicles use regenerative brakes, capturing kinetic energy during deceleration and converting it back into electrical energy to self-charge the battery. Due to this, hybrids see a higher fuel economy in the city (using regenerative brakes) and lower on the highway.

Are there special service requirements for hybrid vehicles?

Like any vehicle, regular maintenance is important for vehicle performance and safety such as oil changes, brake inspections, and tire rotations. Specialized maintenance is needed for regular battery checks and coolant checks are recommended more frequently due to the additional heat caused by the battery. Software systems also play a large part in the managing between the ICE and electric motors, so sofware updates must be maintained for best performance.

How long do hybrid vehicle batteries last?

Hybrid vehicles usually last up to 8 to 10 years or 100,000 to 150,000 miles. These numbers may increase with proper care and regular maintenance. In addition, many hybrid car manufacturers offer warranties that cover the hybrid battery for up to 8 years or 100,000 miles*. Some tips for longer battery life include regular use of the vehicle, smooth driving and utilizing regenerative braking (while maintaining safe distance, anticipating stops and braking gradually).
