Subaru Outback vs Toyota RAV4 Review

Tallahassee Subaru Dealer Serving Panama City, Monticello, Crawfordville and Quincy, FL

The small crossover SUV market has become one of the most heavily fought in the automotive world as each manufacturer fights to be on top of the pile. Among the top contenders are the 2016 Subaru Outback and the 2016 Toyota RAV4. While Subaru has been quick to release information regarding the 2016 Outback, Toyota has been keeping relatively quiet about the 2016 RAV4.

One thing to keep in mind is that both of these crossover SUVs have an excellent pedigree and both manufacturers have plenty of experience designing vehicles in this class. At Proctor Subaru we believe buyers in the Tallahassee area will find that the Outback continues to outclass and outperform the RAV4 in many areas.

Does Performance Compare?

Both the 2016 Outback and RAV4 feature a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine. The Subaru sports its familiar flat four style engine, while the RAV4 has a typical inline four cylinder configuration. Along with the flat four, you can also upgrade your Outback to a far more powerful 3.5 liter V6. The 2.5L Outback produces 175 hp in comparison to the 176 hp produced by the 2.5L in the RAV4, but most drivers in the Tallahassee area will be hard pressed to see this difference.

A smooth shifting constantly variable transmission is standard on all models of the 2016 Outback that offers exceptional fuel economy and is connected to an all-wheel drive system. Those who opt for the RAV4 will find that all models come with a six speed automatic and that you have to pay extra for all-wheel drive. Drivers will find that due to the slightly lower fuel economy, you can expect to spend a little more time and money at the pump each year.

Who Offers More Interior Comfort?

No one can ever say that the folks in the Subaru R&D department do not have their best interests at heart. The 2016 Outback features an extremely spacious interior. Not only does it offer a lot of headroom which is perfect for taller drivers, those who are relegated to the rear seat will find that the Outback offers plenty of legroom, in fact it is among the most spacious in its class. If you need to carry a load you will find that the Subaru offers 36 cubic feet of cargo storage with the rear seats up and a massive 73 cubic feet when you fold the seats down.

The Toyota also offers a fair amount of headroom, but rear legroom comes up a little short. While exact numbers have yet to be released, initial reports show that it does offer a reasonably large cargo area both with the seats upright and folded down.

What are the Differences?

Although both vehicles offer you a reliable car with great features under for $30,000, the Outback excels when you break down the standard features. The Outback offers a wealth of the latest in high tech features, combined with a powerful flat four engine and the latest in all-wheel drive matched to plenty of ground clearance designed for both on and off-road fun. The Outback comes standard with symmetrical all-wheel drive. The Rav4 starts with front wheel drive, and allows for an upgrade to an unsymmetrical all wheel that is based off adding additional hardware to the base model. Subaru has also engineered the Outback to have a low mass to bolster handing.
